Driver’s License Restoration Clinic Helps 78 St. James Parish Area Residents Navigate Path Toward Reinstatement
The Oct. 24 Driver’s License Restoration Clinic helped 78 St. James Parish and surrounding-area residents navigate the reinstatement process, with 11 participants leaving with restored licenses. Community partners, volunteer attorneys, judges and Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles officials worked directly with residents to review individual cases, address barriers and identify next steps toward reinstatement. The clinic demonstrated the impact of community collaboration in helping residents regain driving privileges that can support access to work, family responsibilities and everyday needs.
GRAMERCY, La. – Community partners came together Oct. 24 to help 78 St. James Parish and St. John area residents navigate the driver’s license reinstatement process, providing legal assistance, guidance and resources at the Driver’s License Restoration Clinic. By the end of the event, 11 participants had received their licenses.
The clinic brought together Koch Methanol St. James, Koch Pro Bono Initiative, Baker Botts, the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles, Kean Miller, Liskow, Judge Keyojuan L. Gant‑Turner and Judge Toni Falterman Menard of the 23rd Judicial District Court. The event connected residents with volunteer attorneys, state officials and local judges who could review individual driving records, help identify issues affecting license status and provide guidance on steps toward reinstatement.
Koch Methanol St. James Plant Manager Josh Wiggins has volunteered with the clinic since its beginning and has seen firsthand the impact it can have for local residents.
“Having a driver’s license can make a meaningful difference in someone’s ability to get to work, care for their family and manage everyday responsibilities,” said Wiggins. “It was rewarding to volunteer alongside so many people who gave their time and expertise to help our neighbors work through the process.”
Teresa Jones with Baker Botts, who has been involved with the clinic since its inception, reflected on this year’s turnout, collaboration and impact: “What makes this clinic so special is the commitment of attorney volunteers, judges, OMV officials, and community partners and the ability to turn opportunities for service into meaningful outcomes for the people who need it the most,” she said. “This year’s turnout was a powerful reminder of the need for these services and the impact we can make when we work together.”
For Rhonda, a participant of the event, the clinic made a process she was unsure how to navigate, much easier. After learning about the event on Facebook, she signed up and worked directly with OMV to resolve her driver’s license issue which originated from a license plate from a previous vehicle.
“I wasn’t sure how to turn in a license plate off of an old vehicle,” she said. Rhonda said she felt supported throughout the process and was in and out of the clinic in less than 20 minutes. Her encouragement to others, who might be facing the same issues, is simple: “I wish they would come out and get their license.”
The clinic was designed to help participants understand issues affecting their license status, which can include insurance lapses, court obligations, unpaid traffic violations and certain holds. Volunteer attorneys and participating agencies worked with residents to review their individual circumstances and identify potential next steps.
David LaCerte, who worked alongside the Koch Pro Bono Team and Baker Botts to help launch the original Driver’s License Clinic in St. James Parish, also attended this year’s event. LaCerte currently serves as Commissioner on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
Koch Methanol St. James extends its appreciation to the organizations, sponsors, judges, attorneys and volunteers who contributed their time and resources to support the clinic.
