Makers of Methanol: Emma Li Leads North American Supply and Optimization

Every year, the Koch Methanol St. James facility produces 1.8 million tons of methanol. Getting that volume to the right places requires strategic planning and careful coordination. Enter Emma Li, Director of North America Supply and Optimization at Koch Methanol. Emma oversees where those tons are sent, guiding the product to the right regions and customers.

“My job is to make sure every ton of methanol is optimized,” Emma said. “It comes down to deciding where we sell our product, which regions we target and which customers we serve.”

Career growth and company culture at Koch Methanol

Reaching that level of strategic expertise did not happen overnight. Emma has built a 14-year career at Koch, starting straight out of her graduate studies at the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University. After landing a summer internship, she received a full-time job offer to work as an international market analyst in Wichita, Kansas. While she initially focused on fertilizer and methanol, she eventually shifted her attention entirely to methanol. She later relocated to Koch’s Houston office to work more closely with the commercial side of the business.

During her tenure, Emma watched the methanol operation grow from a 600-kiloton domestic business into a 2 million-ton global enterprise. She credits this personal and professional growth to a company culture that values promoting from within. Rather than forcing employees into rigid boxes, leadership shapes roles around the individual by considering what a person brings to the table.

“Koch really believes in its people,” Emma shared. “They believe people want to do meaningful work. So if you give them the platform and the opportunity for people to grow, they will reach their potential.”

Connecting global methanol supply and market strategy

As director, Emma turns facility production into a global market strategy. Her team evaluates operational data to determine sales volumes and adjusts its approach as market conditions shift. She manages United States trading and coordinates with European distribution teams to balance supply across the globe.

Working alongside the gas and shipping groups in Houston keeps her connected to the larger market. This cross-functional perspective helps her team stay flexible, adjusting their supply strategies to navigate industry trends.

“My job is to constantly think about the day-to-day execution part and the long-term strategic perspective,” Emma explained. “How do we optimize this business? How do we bring this business to the next stage?”

Establishing the St. James methanol production hub

Turning that kind of strategic vision into reality is a familiar process for Emma. When looking back at her career, Emma is particularly proud of her involvement in the St. James project. When Koch first explored the idea of a new facility, she was on the team analyzing long-term pricing.

“Koch Methanol was considering production for a long time, and we looked at multiple opportunities,” Emma shared. “St. James was the clear choice.”

Her involvement went beyond just the numbers. By chance, she met an engineer involved with the site at a gathering, which eventually led to their respective leaders connecting. Fast forward to today, Koch is the 100% owner of the facility. For Emma, watching the site go from an initial market analysis to a fully operational production hub makes guiding its product to market even more rewarding.

Her top priority as a director is helping her team grow. She advises them to build a solid knowledge base and find a role they are passionate about.

“First, you have to invest in people,” Emma shared. “As a leader, your number one job is to make your direct report better.”

For Emma, true transformation means equipping her team for the future. She challenges her group to decrease inefficiency and explore how technology can help them focus on higher-level strategy and create more value for the business. By focusing on excellence today, she believes the future will take care of itself.

“I don't know what my next role will look like, but I know that if I focus on doing what I'm doing today well, new opportunities will definitely occur at Koch Methanol,” Emma said.
