Makers of Methanol: Karli Oubre Leads Safety Training and Site Security
Safe operations start with a secure site. Meet Karli Oubre, the specialist establishing the safety standards vital to Koch Methanol St. James.
Before the complex chemistry of methanol production can begin, the facility must have a strong operational foundation. That is where Karli Oubre makes her mark. As a safety and security specialist at Koch Methanol St. James (KMSJ), she works behind the scenes to manage our site security program, track and implement the safety training program and support the site’s transportation compliance.
Karli’s role is to help create a safe and secure workspace for all of our employees, contractors and visitors. By managing site accountability, security and safety training, she provides the stability the operations team needs to focus on their work. Her story is one of professional growth, deep local roots and a commitment to maintaining a facility that earns the pride of St. James Parish and the surrounding community.
Transitioning from administrative support to safety specialist
Karli’s connection to the site is unique. In a twist of local history, the facility’s administration building is the same structure where she attended high school. After seven years in medical billing, Karli looked for a more fulfilling career path and joined YCI Methanol One in 2018 during the facility’s construction phase.
Starting as an administrative assistant to the project director, she attended critical meetings, gaining a behind-the-scenes understanding of the rationale for specific operational decisions. This experience allowed her to understand the entire process from start to finish and to build rapport and relationships with the team.
When Koch acquired the company, Karli transitioned into the environmental, health and safety department. Her historical knowledge of the site and strong organizational skills made her a natural fit for a more specialized role. Karli continues to grow into her role and expand her expertise into new subjects!
Managing site security and compliance training programs
In 2022, Karli stepped into her current position, where she manages two key pillars of operations: site security and safety training. Methanol production relies on precision and a controlled environment. Karli manages accountability for everyone who enters the site, from employees to contractors, which is crucial to ensure all personnel can be accounted for in the case of an emergency.
She develops and manages compliance training that qualifies every on-site employee to perform their jobs safely. For Karli, this role is about building partnerships rather than enforcing rules.
“Building trust with the employees is vital,” Karli said. “We never want to be seen as the ‘safety police.’ We are partners here to help everyone do their job well and get home safely to their families.”
One of her proudest achievements was overseeing a comprehensive fence line security project. She helped implement automated systems to detect, deter and delay unauthorized access, significantly enhancing the facility’s overall safety.
Finding a voice through Principle Based Management
What keeps Karli engaged is Koch Methanol’s culture of empowerment. She appreciates the company’s Principle Based Management Philosophy, noting that it encourages employees to think outside the box rather than simply following a rules-based checklist. This environment allowed her to transform the security function from a basic administrative task into a robust, proactive department.
“Koch honestly encourages you to realize what potential you have,” Karli shared. “You aren’t just given tasks; you are given ownership and a voice to make real changes.”
Every morning, Karli leads the initial portion of the daily production meeting. Her input helps the team identify small issues before they become larger problems, directly contributing to the facility’s reliability and continuous improvement.
Investing in the St. James community and its neighbors
Because she lives just down the road, Karli has a high standard for how the plant operates. She sees the facility’s commitment to compliance not just as a corporate requirement, but as a promise to the community.
“I truly feel safe coming to work every day,” Karli emphasized. “I wouldn't work here and I certainly wouldn't live ten minutes away if I didn't believe in how we operate. We put so much pride into maintaining a safe place for our employees and our neighbors.”
That pride extends to community service. Karli is a regular volunteer with Koch Methanol at community events, including the “Fast Food Farm” forum, where she helps teach local students about agriculture. She was also moved by the impact of the driver’s license restoration clinic, an initiative that helps residents resolve legal hurdles to regain their licenses.
“It is eye-opening to see the needs in your own community,” Karli said. “Seeing the relief on people’s faces reminds you that we can make a distinct difference right here at home.”
Career advice for future safety professionals
For anyone considering a role in industrial safety or security, Karli advised embracing the opportunity to learn. The role offers an opportunity to work across all departments, preventing silos and building a holistic view of the business.
“Take that chance with the role,” she advised. “It is fulfilling work where you can see the difference you are making every single day.”
Karli Oubre supports both the process and the people. Her dedication helps Koch Methanol St. James remain a safe and trusted member of the St. James Parish community.
